Just Practicing

I was wishing lately that I knew how to make fancy cupcakes, so I went to Michael's and bought a few things to give it a try. I think Martha Stewart is safe.
The purple-ish one on the right down here reminds me a little of intestines, no?
Hey, it's almost Halloween.
I like this one. Looks like a sea anemone. Where's Nemo?
On a serious note, I really would like to make some nice cupcakes for a baby shower in a few weeks. Something with no piping I think...hehe. I was thinking of getting one of those little cupcake tiers.
Any ideas?? I'd love to hear from you. (pics would be great too)

I've tried this same thing before. I have no idea!! I'm thinking that Martha should have a tutorial out there somewhere. Have a great day.

These are so CUTE Julie. I recently purchased my first set of tips from Michaels and am having sooo much fun learning to frost cup cakes with my daughter. I think yours looks so adorable.

I think they look great. I'm a little partial though, I love a great star tipped frosted cupcake! That's always number one in my book and yours look great!

I suck at icing cakes. That's why I make pies.

Wilton has some cute ideas with lots of how-tos.

They have baby booty ones that are just ADORABLE!! No skill required; I know because I've made them, grins.

I have a decorating kit that I think I've only used once. I'm afraid my tips would be of no help. I don't think they look so bad. I like the last one.

I took a cupcake decorating class last weekend and the instructor suggests using the hand you write with to hold the piping bag. But first you want to fill the piping bag 2/3 of the way and twist the top closed. Keep the twisted part of the piping bag in the nook (between the thumb and forefinger) of your hand and use the other hand to help guide you. You may think you have a steady hand but most people don't. You need the other hand to help stablize the other. And don't let the tips touch the cupcake. You want to start piping about about 1/4 inch above the cupcake.

Also consistency of icing is key. If it's too thin the details won't hold their shape and if it's too think the icing will break off as you release pressure.

Just practice on a sheet of parchment paper and when you're done scrape it all back into the bag and try again.

If you want simple, just tint the icing and pipe it like you did in the first picture. Add an edible flower, decorative picks or sprinkles in coordinating colors.

I just made baby shower cupcakes and I'll post them next week. Hope this helps!

The first pic looks very good. You are braver than I am....My decorating skills are very limited and I'm thinking of taking a cake decorating class at the local Michael's....all my cakes look the same when I frost them!

Practice, practice, practice! I got too impatient and ate all of my practice. Nom, nom, nom. I just don't have the patience like our friend, Monica, does!
