Boston Cream Pie

Martha Stewart is ruining my life. That might be a bit of an overstatement, but she definitely did ruin my day. I found the recipe for her Boston Cream Pie at her website, and though "oh, I'll try that...why not?" PFFT! Why not indeed. I think this is one of the more labor intensive things I've ever tried to make. I probably spent a little over 3 hours on this! For a stupid little cake!
I'd like to be able to say that it was worth the time and effort; that it's the most glorious piece of baked good I've ever shoved into my face. But that would be untrue. It's not bad by any means. But definitely not worth the blood, sweat, and tears that went into it.
I can recall some time in the past purchasing one of those dessert kits for boston cream pie that was easy peasy, and it was just as good. Next time I'll save myself the trouble and get one of those. Thanks a whole heap, Martha.
P.S. Oh yeah...I only need one more fabulous person to follow me and I'll have 90! I'm not above begging. PLEEEASE! Maybe when I get to 100 I'll have a little giveaway.

  2. I think I have 88 followers- only 2 more! Exciting :-)

Well, I have to say that this stupid little cake is pretty and it sure looks good. You'd probably be better of making a yellow cake and filling it with boxed vanilla pudding. It'd work in a pinch and would be much easier.

Sorry it wasn't worth your effort :-(

  3. This cake sure looks good but if there's an easier way to do it and it's just as good then this is not worth it.

  4. When i saw the picture, I thought "YUM, I want to make that". It looks fantastic, but I agree with you about a 3 hour commitment to a little cake.

I wish I could make #90, but I'm already one of your followers from way back.

  7. I swear, some of my biggest kitchen failures were the ones that took the most time, and cost the most money. Isn't that always how it goes. It look pretty though!

  11. What a bummer when time spent in the kitchen isn't worth the effort! However, it looks deliciously yum! You ought to check out my blue Cotton Crunch--it's a piece of cake (lol)!

  12. It is pretty. Looks good anyway. 3 hours on one cake, I don't have the time, unless it's the middle of winter. Cause in spring/summer have to be outside.

Congrats at this posting you have 91 followers.

  16. Thank you for visiting my blog. You are past 90!! I love this blog, I am a frustrated chef. I understand about the Martha Stewart thing somethings are not worth all the effort. My husband got me a Gordon Ramsey cookbook for Christmas and it is really cool, the recipes are reader friendly and don't take long to make.

  20. I am splitting a side laughing over the Boston cream pie. I don't make it for the exact reasons you stated. Way too much work for the just-okay outcome. Your cake does look fabulous though. And if offered a piece I would eat it and be very happy. I just wouldn't rush to make one.

  21. Ha-ha! As bloggers do we win a prize when our blog reaches a certain amount of followers?

I really hate when that happens you put all this time into making what you think is going to be a totally awesome dessert and then it's just okay or worse (happened to me recently) terrible! It does look nice though!

  22. Well, it certainly looks like the work was worth it! I bet Martha would be quite proud to have it on the cover of her magazine. I've lived in Boston for almost a year and still haven't had this :D!
